Issue 2 - January 2023

“Annual income 20 pounds, annual expenditures 19 pounds 19 shillings and sixpence, result happiness. Annual income 20 pounds, annual expenditures 20 pounds and sixpence, result misery.”

(Mr. Micawber - David Copperfield by Charles Dickens)

As we commence our 33rd year as the WRTJS, your Board objectives are to avoid “misery” and achieve more “happiness” by focusing on the following objectives:

Increasing attendance and attaining profitability by providing our current and new members with the optimum music and social experience for their listening and dancing enjoyment.

To this end, our Winter/Spring 2023 band schedule to date features some new bands and an old favourite to get the toes tapping:

Jan 8- Whitridge Brothers

Jan 15- White Rock Rhythm Kings- featuring Glen Tremblay

Jan 22- Ben MacRae Jazz Band

Jan 29- Dave Quinn’s RazzMaJazz

Feb 5 - Scott Robertson’s “Swing Patrol”

Feb 12- No Jazz (Superbowl)

Feb 19- Square Pegs Jazzy Band

Feb 26- Tom and Georgina Arntzen

Mar 5- White Rock Rhythm Kings

Mar 12-TBA

Mar 19- Crescent City Shakers

Mar26- Scott Robertson's “Swing Patrol”

Also very important for our club to avoid “result misery” is for all members who have not renewed their membership for 2023 to renew at our first concert of 2023, or as soon as possible after.

There is an old adage namely “If you don’t ask, you don’t get”. Well, our club welcomes any donations that will help us achieve profitability, however; unlike the “Thrift Store On the Corner” we do not accept non-monetary items such as antique bottle caps, left handed screwdrivers or Teletubbies DVDs... Of course, 50/50 winnings are always welcome. As they say at the blood bank, “Give until it hurts!”

The Bellingham Traditional Jazz Society starts their 2023 season on Jan 7/2023 featuring the Bellingham Dixieland All Stars. They support us, please support them!

Happy New Year to all our members, and as they say in New Orleans, “Laissez les bon temps rouler.”

Bill Maddox, President
